Business Continuity Management (BCI) Diploma

Business Continuity Institute:

The BCI is the world’s most eminent BCM institute and is instantly recognised as standing for good practice and professionalism within continuity and related industries.  Holders of the BCI Diploma in Business Continuity Management will receive the designation of DBCI from the Business Continuity Institute, and holders of the DBCI, who can also demonstrate 3 or more years’ experience as a BCM practitioner, may then apply to become a Member of the Business Continuity Institute (MBCI). DBCI holders with less than 3 years’ experience may apply to become Associate Member of the Business Continuity Institute (AMBCI) upgrading to MBCI once they have sufficient experience.

Course Description

The BCI BSM Diploma is an online learning and educational programme consisting of three 10-week modules. Student participation is necessary to successfully complete the BCI Diploma. Students are expected to complete the modules in sequence achieving all three before the Diploma can be awarded. Guidance and advice is provided to students by the module tutors via email, telephone and or VoIP (Skype). Learning material is accessed via the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) ‘Blackboard’ and the opportunity to engage in online live sessions is also available.

Tasks and Assessments:
Students are expected to participate in formative activities aimed at developing knowledge and understanding of Business Continuity, leading to the completion of the summative assignment at the end of Module 1 and 2. Module 3 provides the opportunity to research a particular area in more detail.

Module 1: Business Continuity Management Best Practice and History
Structure:
10 weeks: An 8 Week ‘learning cycle’ with 2 weeks dedicated to the completion of the summative assignment.
Study time: 4-8 hours - this may vary depending upon experience

The aim of this module is to contextualise learning and knowledge of the Business Continuity Management (BCM) Lifecycle, its context and history. In particular the Professional Practices (1-6) and how they shape the management aspects of Business Continuity: PP1: Policy and Programme management, PP2 Embedding BCM in organisational culture and the four technical elements; PP3 Analysis, PP4 Design, PP5 Implementation and PP6 Validation. Students are encouraged to explore business continuity practices within their own organization (or one which they are familiar with), to complete the tasks for this particular module. All formative tasks are aligned with the BCI Good Practice Guidelines, in particular the individual Professional Practices. Students are not only encouraged to develop a wider understanding of BCM but also academic skills as part of the education and learning process.

Module 2: Business Continuity Management – Emerging Solutions
Structure:
10 weeks: An 8 Week ‘learning cycle’ with 2 weeks dedicated to the completion of the summative assignment.
Study time: 4-8 hours - this may vary depending upon experience

This module provides the opportunity to research the practice of business continuity in more detail. Students are encouraged to develop a detailed academic approach to their studies, by researching, reviewing and analyzing a range of current and predicted BCM and resilience issues. In this phase of the Diploma students will be encouraged to develop the ability to present arguments, and theories via a range of formative tasks. This encourages the development of an analytical approach to business continuity by understanding concepts and ideas beyond that of guidelines and standards.

Module 3: Business Continuity Management – Research Paper
Structure:
10 weeks: To complete and agree the proposal and ethics associated with the research topic and to submit the completed paper.
Study time: 6-8 hours - this may vary depending upon the area of research and associated work to collate necessary information.

Students have the opportunity to identify a topic associated with business continuity to produce a paper based to demonstrate the ability to analysis, review and evaluate findings. The paper should also present recommendations and conclusions based on related theories to support a sound knowledge and understanding of the subject. Throughout the module students will be fully supported in the protocols of research.

Upon completion:
Students must achieve all three modules to successfully complete the Diploma. Thereafter students will receive a ‘Certificate’ endorsed by Business Continuity Institute and Buckinghamshire New University to confirm the successful completion of the BCI Diploma in Business Continuity Management. A ‘transcript’ will also be provided by the University as evidence of the marks awarded for each module and the successful completion of the Diploma. The process can very and at times take several weeks. Students will also receive the designation of DBCI from the Business Continuity Institute, and holders of the DBCI, who can also demonstrate 3 or more years’ experience as a BCM practitioner, may then apply to become a Member of the Business Continuity Institute (MBCI). Certificate Issue:

Progression:
Subject to additional requirements students who successfully complete the BCI Diploma in Business Continuity Management will be eligible to apply for the University’s MSc in Organisational Resilience.
